Breanna was born weighing 7 lbs. She lost half a pound her first week, which is normal, but was slow to gain it back. It turns out that while Bree was a very sweet little eater with a strong latch, she was falling asleep at the breast. She needed to gain weight to have the strength to receive a full feeding. In addition to actively keeping Bree alert at the breast for 45-60 minute feedings, Kelley had to introduce supplemental feedings by expressing milk after each feeding. This was exhausting for everyone...like feeding twins.! We were able to continue on with the supplemental feedings for over a month motivated by bi-weekly weight checks at the doctors office that proved we were slowing gaining weight to the tune of 1/2 pound each week.
